The 40 Developmental Assets
The 40 Developmental Assets are common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and ultimately will help them to become caring, responsible adults. Assets promote positive behaviors and attitudes in youth, while at the same time protecting them from taking part in at-risk behaviors. The more assets young people have the more likely they will be successful in all things they do and the less likely they will make harmful or unhealthy choices.
The link below will take you to a page where you can look at what assets to build within your child at any age. You will find an asset list for each age group and a checklist so you can see how many assets, out of 40, your child has. You can then make a plan on how to increase assets.
This is important because the more assets your child has, the more likely they are to be leaders, value diversity, be healthy, and to be successful in school. The fewer assets your child has the more likely they will engage in drug & alcohol abuse, violence, and risky sexual behavior.
